Post #34 designated as official stop on Medal of Honor highway

On Saturday, March 4, members of the American Legion Post #34 met at the Gordon location to commemorate a special distinction.

Post #34 was designated as an official stop on the Nebraska Medal of Honor Highway, Highway 20 and was officially welcomed in as a Nebraska Medal of Honor Community.

In a project that was started by the Nebraska Medal of Honor Foundation, two green signs were originally placed on the eastern and western side of Highway 20. But funding and permission from the State of Nebraska Department of Roads has increased the number of signs from 2 to 24.

This designated the green signs as excess and Nebraska Medal of Honor Foundation President Daryl Harrison thought that Post #34 would be a perfect spot for a permanent home.

The sign will go in the Memorial Park which sits along the highway at the Gordon American Legion. It’s exact set-up is still to be determined at this time.

Harrison also brought two other signs, designating Gordon as a Nebraska Medal of Honor Community. These signs are 24 inches by 24 inches and will be attached to the population signs on either side of the Gordon city limits.

“The State authorized us to begin the Community Recognition Sign program,” said Harrison.

“We held a contest for the design and a student from Bancroft submitted the winning design. The names of all the Nebraska Medal of Honor recipients are transcribed into the stripes of each of the signs,” he added.

This program is continuing to grow as well, as Harrison notes that a large collaborative effort is going on behind the scenes to unite all twelve states to make a National Medal of Honor Highway.
