Grooms found not guilty on all six charges

The Sheridan County Courthouse played host to a highly anticipated jury trial this past week.
The trial would feature the defendant Gilbert Grooms facing six total counts of charges, including one count of Attempted First Degree Murder.
The trial began on Monday, August 14 with Sheridan County District Court Judge Travis O’Gorman presiding.
The trial would last until Thursday, August 17 and when the jury came back from deliberation, Grooms learned his fate.
On all six charges on the docket, Grooms was found not guilty by the jury of his peers, and he walked out of the courtroom a free man.
The six charges were Attempted First Degree Murder, First Degree Assault, Terroristic Threats, and three counts of Use of a Firearm to Commit a Felony.
The original incident took place on Wednesday, June 8, 2022 in Rushville at the Sheridan Livestock Market.
According to a Nebraska State Patrol Press Release, a verbal altercation occurred in the parking lot and Grooms retrieved a shotgun from his vehicle.
He then fired in the direction of Charles Winters, who resides in Martin, S.D.
Grooms fired multiple times at Winters before hitting him in the midsection.
Winters was flown to Regional West Hospital in Scottsbluff, Neb. following the incident with non-life threatening injuries.
This led to the Sheridan County Sheriffs Department in arresting Grooms that same day and lodging him in the Sheridan County Jail on the charges he was tried for this past week.
