Bernita Belle Dahlgren Safe was born November 17, 1934, in Merriman, Neb., to Leigh and Belle Dahlgren. She died at her home in Denver, Colo., on November 14, 2019.
Bernita graduated from Merriman High School in 1952 and married Lawrence (Bud) A. Goodwin, December 18, 1953. Two children were born, Carolyn (Candy) J., and Darrell A. Goodwin. They were divorced March 2, 1961. In 1966 she secured a position with the Department of Justice, Bureau of Prisons and FCI, located in Englewood, Colo., and relocated her family to Denver. Shortly after the move she met Kenneth W. Safe, and they were married on June 8, 1968. He adopted both children in August of 1969. She served in the capacity of Personnel Management Specialist for 20 years and retired June 6, 1986.
After retiring, Bernita stayed very active for many years as a volunteer at the University Hills Baptist Church Food Bank until its closure. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Lone Willow Chapter. Some of the things she enjoyed most were dancing, sewing, bowling, and she took pride in her yard and flower beds.
She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn (Candy) J. Scheuerell, Denver; granddaughter, Lanette (Shawn) Young, Strasburg, Colo.; grandson, Jay (Myriah) Vandre, Aurora, Colo.; two great-grandchildren, Codi Young and Maya Vandre; brother, Jack Dahlgren, Valentine, Neb.; two sisters, Laveta Edwards, Gordon, and Oleta Skinner, Merriman; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth W. Safe; son, Darrell A. Safe; parents, Leigh and Belle Dahlgren; and brother, Arthur J. Dahlgren.
Celebration of Life services will be held at the American Legion Post #1, on Saturday, December 14, 2019, in Denver. Graveside services will be held at Gordon Cemetery at a later date.
