Mustang comeback falls short against Alliance

By Scott Bidroski

The Gordon-Rushville Mustang football team returned to GRHS to open the home portion of their schedule on Friday, August 31.

Their opponent for the evening would be the Alliance Bulldogs and the teams had a beautiful late August evening to battle it out on the gridiron.

Alliance would use a 30 yard pass and a 12 yard pass to stack their lead up to 16-0 heading into halftime.

Following the break, the Bulldogs would find paydirt once again, completing a 40 yard pass for another score.

The Bulldogs converted the 2 pt conversions on all three of their touchdowns, pushing their lead to 24-0 in the middle of the third quarter.

Things were looking dismal for the home town in that quarter and a big play was needed.

Junior Kyler Vincent provided that big play, nabbing the ensuing kickoff at the 6 yard line and busting loose for the 94 yard kickoff return TD.

This gave the momentum back to the Mustangs for the time being until the Bulldogs did their best to answer.

A long drive by Alliance set them up in the red zone against the Mustang defense.

A pass into the corner of the end zone by the Bulldogs would be stolen away by sophomore Johnny Ziller.

Ziller immediately broke free down the sideline using his speed and he was able to return it 104 yards for the score.

The back-to-back scores once again shifted momentum back to the Mustangs as they headed into the final stanza.

Vincent would break free once again in this quarter, rushing for a score from 40 yards out.

The extra point attempt from junior Bronson Freeseman was good and made the score 24-20.

The Mustang defense would hold the Bulldogs on the next possession, with the exclamation point coming from junior Maddox Leeper who picked up a crucial sack.

The offense would give it their best shot to answer but a Ziller pass would fall into the hands of the Bulldog secondary, sealing the win for the visitors.

With the 24-20 loss, the Mustangs record dropped to 0-2 on the season.

They will make a trip to Sidney this upcoming Friday, September 8 to take on the 2-0 Red Raiders.
